Year 9 – AGA Deer Park

On Thursday, 12 September all Year 9s attended Apprenticeships Group Australia half day Open Day. Students actively participated in hands-on activities in trades. Students interacted with local businesses, toured training facilities, viewed scaled house constructions and looked at plumbing, carpentry and electrical and automotive.

Wednesday, 6 November

Careers Excursion to Avalon Airport. Led by the CEO of Avalon Airport, students were shown through the entrance, check-in and given a talk about growth of Avalon Airport. 680 people are employed at Avalon and growing. Next year, Air China and Vietnam Air will be added as international carriers, together with current Air Asia and Jetstar.

We were taken on the school bus on the main runway/tarmac to hear about aviation careers, air traffic tower, employment, security, navigation aids, aviation rescue and fire-fighting.

YEARS 9 & 10 – DEAKIN UNIVERSITY, GEELONG WATERFRONT CAMPUS

Wednesday, 6 November

Careers Excursion to Deakin University, Geelong. Students were given a presentation in a lecture theatre about all the tertiary courses available at Geelong, Burwood and Warrnambool. We were then broken into two groups and toured nursing and midwifery, architecture and construction management, commerce/law, student services, library with lunch in the Deakin Café. After lunch we returned to participate in some occupational therapy (OT) activities. We also had a quick bus drive around the City of Geelong Waterfront precinct and nearby Geelong train line.

POWER OF ENGINEERING CHALLENGE – Victoria University Footscray

Wednesday, 13 November

Sponsored by Toyota and Boeing. The Years 9 & 10 girls met with student and graduate engineers and heard about growth in engineering jobs.

Presentation by Boeing engineer in lecture theatre. Students took part in interactive and hands-on workshops, showcasing a variety of engineering disciplines including building structural towers and robotics.

Students learnt about a variety of engineering disciplines through creative and engaging workshops, demonstrating a general engineering process of problem definition, idea generation, implementation and team work. Students mixed in small groups with Emmanuel College Years 9 and 10 girls and learnt creative problem solving, critical thinking, designing, applying science, communicating and collaborating, teamwork and leadership. We also went on a quick tour of Victoria University.
